⚓ The Strait

The city’s name means a narrow waterway.

Detroit comes from the French word détroit, which means strait, a narrow passage of water.

Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac began Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit on July 24, 1701.

The city grew beside the Detroit River, with Canada on the other shore.
